Isabela Fraga is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Romance Studies at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on personhood, subjectivity, and language in the context of chattel slavery in Latin America and the Spanish Caribbean. She holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago (2022), specializing in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies.

Her first book project examines the affective lives of enslaved and free people of African descent in 19th-century Brazil and Cuba. She is a member of the interdisciplinary Working Group on Slavery and Visual Culture, exploring post-abolition connections between photography, psychiatry, anthropology, and Afro-Atlantic religions. Courses taught include 'Slavery in Latin America' and 'Lat Am Lit Nation Blding-21 C.'
Professional history includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship and Lecturer role at Stanford University (2022–2024).
