About
Dr. Kapildeb Ambal serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics within the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wichita State University. His experimental research focuses on nanoscale quantum phenomena and spin-dependent electronic processes in condensed matter systems.
Education:
- Ph.D., Physics, University of Utah, 2016
- M.S., Physics, University of Utah, 2012
- M.Sc., Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India, 2006
- B.Sc., Physics, University of Calcutta, India, 2004
Dr. Ambal's research program investigates quantum spin phenomena through experimental condensed matter physics, specializing in magnetism and spin dynamics at the nanoscale. His group develops custom instrumentation for quantum sensing applications using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, explores 2D van der Waals quantum magnets, and studies spin-dependent transport in semiconductor devices. Current projects include quantum transduction using magnons, on-chip magnetometers for navigation systems, and tuning magnetic properties of 2D materials through doping.
His laboratory designs and builds specialized experimental setups including custom FMR probe heads and integrated RF/microwave/optical control systems. The group has secured significant NSF funding with Award #2328822 ($800,000, 2023-2026) and Award #2033210 ($209,287, 2021-2024), supporting hands-on student training in advanced experimental techniques. Recent activities include presentations at the APS Global Physics Summit 2025 on CrTe2 magnetism research.
