Kai Li is a Senior Research Scientist at the CISTER Research Unit of ISEP/IPP and a CMU-Portugal Research Fellow, supported by Carnegie Mellon University and Portugal’s FCT. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from UNSW Australia. His roles include Visiting Research Scientist at the University of Cambridge (2023–2024) and Visiting Research Scholar at CMU’s CyLab (2022). Prior positions include Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at SUTD-MIT (2014–2016) and Research Assistant roles at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and CSIRO.
Education: B.E. (Shandong University, 2009), M.S. (HKUST, 2010), PhD (UNSW Sydney, 2014). Research focuses on IoT, cybersecurity, UAV systems, federated learning, and edge computing. He has authored over 50 journal/conference papers and is an Associate Editor for journals like Internet of Things (Elsevier), Nature Computer Science (Springer), and IEEE Access. He is an IEEE Senior Member and ACM member.
Recent work emphasizes federated learning security, UAV surveillance, and 6G network orchestration. His publications span IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, TIFS, and ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems. Projects include the IBEX initiative on cyber-physical programming.
