Surya Nepal

Dr Surya Nepal is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Data61, where he leads the Cybersecurity and Quantum Systems group comprising over 50 research staff and 40 research students. He has been with CSIRO since 2000 and holds adjunct and honorary professor positions at UNSW and Macquarie University, respectively.

His educational background includes a PhD from RMIT University, a Master of Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), and a Bachelor of Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Surat, India.

Dr Nepal's research focuses on cybersecurity, with specific interests in quantum-safe cryptography, trusted distributed systems, and web security. His work has resulted in over 300 publications in top venues such as ACM CCS, IEEE S&P, and NDSS, and has been recognized with best paper awards. His research has significant impact, as evidenced by over 21,000 citations and an h-index of 66.

He has received numerous accolades including being named a Fellow of IEEE and several awards from CSIRO for publications and inventions.

Dr Nepal actively contributes to the academic community as Interim Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing and on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Internet Technology and Frontiers in Big Data. He has served as program chair for multiple international conferences and has delivered keynotes globally.

His research is supported by major funding from government and industry bodies including ARC, US Army, Boeing, AFP, and NATO. He previously served as theme leader for the Cyber Security CRC and currently leads the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR).

Dr Nepal is also a co-inventor of 8 patents and has edited three books and several conference proceedings.
