About
Dr. Kai Chen is a Research Fellow and Head of the Molecular Biology and Imaging Laboratory (MBIL) at The University of Western Australia (UWA). He holds positions in the School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Molecular Sciences, with affiliations to the Centre for Human Lactation Research and Translation. Dr. Chen completed medical and orthopaedic surgery training in China, followed by a PhD in Bone Biology at UWA (2016–2019) and postdoctoral training in molecular imaging and nanobiotechnology (2020–2023). His research focuses on integrating light, electron, and ion microscopy to study skeletal biology, drug delivery, and disease mechanisms.
Education:
- PhD in Bone Biology, UWA (2016–2019)
- Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery, Wenzhou Medical University (2012–2015)
- Bachelor of Medicine, Wenzhou Medical University (2007–2012)
Research interests include skeletal disorders (osteoporosis, osteoarthritis), molecular imaging technologies, and nanobiotechnology. Current projects explore nanoscale metabolism in bone marrow, RNA drug trafficking, and spatial iron metabolism.
Key awards include the European Calcified Tissue Society New Investigator Award (2024), Kaye Ibbertson Award (2023), and Raine Priming Grant (2023–2024). He leads multiple grants, including NHMRC Ideas Grant (2025–2028) and ARC Early Career Fellowship (2024–2027).
Labs/Teams: MBIL focuses on correlative imaging workflows and drug delivery. Collaborations include projects on cancer metastasis, antisense technology, and multimodal microscopy platforms.
