Dr. Kae Hashimoto Reed serves as a Visiting Lecturer of Music at Arkansas Tech University within the Arts & Humanities school, teaching in both the Department of Music and Department of English and World Languages. She concurrently holds the position of Principal Timpanist with the Fort Smith Symphony and serves on Arkansas Tech's drumline staff. An internationally active performer with decades of experience across Asia and the United States, Dr. Reed specializes in bridging classical western percussion, world percussion, and cross-cultural genres through diverse collaborations.
Her academic credentials include a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance from the University of Memphis, Master of Music from New York University, and Bachelor of Arts from Osaka Kyoiku University in Japan. Previous appointments include Percussion Instructor at Mahidol University's College of Music in Thailand and Principal Timpanist of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dr. Reed's research and artistic focus centers on percussion performance, world music, and cross-cultural studies, with particular emphasis on Japanese traditional music (especially Taiko drumming) and international music collaboration. Her teaching philosophy integrates multi-cultural experiences to promote diversity and inclusion, reflected in courses like MUSIC OF THE WORLD'S PEOPLE and Japanese language/culture programs.
She founded and directed the Integrated Percussion Ensemble and served as Percussion Instructor for Thailand's Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble conference (SAYOWE). Dr. Reed's performance career spans venues including Merkin Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center, and international events like Washington D.C.'s Cherry Blossom Festival, with endorsements from JG Percussion, Korogi Marimbas, and Encore Mallets.
