Jürgen Scheffran

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Scheffran is Professor of Integrative Geography at the University of Hamburg, where he leads the Climate Change and Security (CLISEC) research group at the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability and within the Climate Excellence Cluster 'Climate, Climatic Change, and Society' (CLICCS). He holds a doctorate in physics and has extensive interdisciplinary experience across institutions in Europe and North America.

His research examines complex human-environment interactions, with focus areas including:

• Climate risks and security linkages
• Environmental migration and resource conflicts
• Water-food-energy nexus optimization
• Agent-based modeling of conflict/cooperation
• Sustainability transitions and technology assessment

Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on climate-conflict relationships, transdisciplinary methodologies, and regional case studies (particularly Africa and Middle East), employing advanced modeling techniques to address environmental security challenges.

He maintains active collaborations with international organizations including the United Nations and German governmental bodies, contributing expertise on climate security policy and displacement mitigation strategies.
