Jutta Beck

Dr. Jutta Beck is an academic assistant and lecturer at the Seminar for General Rhetoric within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tübingen. She completed her doctorate in 2024 with research on corporeality and rhetoric in Roman antiquity under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joachim Knape and Prof. Dr. Robert Kirstein.

Her educational background includes master's degrees in both general rhetoric and Latin philology from the University of Tübingen.

Dr. Beck's research focuses on the intersection of rhetoric, classical studies, and corporeality. She investigates how bodily expression functions within ancient rhetorical traditions, particularly in Roman contexts. Her work bridges historical rhetorical theory with contemporary applications, examining how ancient rhetorical concepts can inform modern communication practices. She has a particular interest in the rhetorical function of the body, narrative structures in classical texts, and the application of rhetorical theory to medical discourse.

Her recent scholarly work demonstrates a strong focus on body rhetoric in antiquity, with publications exploring corporeality in Cicero's Philippic Orations, the rhetorical function of storytelling, and the representation of health and disease in ancient balance metaphors. Her research connects classical rhetorical theory with contemporary communication challenges.

Dr. Beck has received recognition for her interdisciplinary approach to rhetoric and classical studies through invitations to present her work at numerous academic conferences across Germany.

As an educator, she has taught a range of courses including Historical Rhetoric, Foundations of Ancient Rhetoric Theory, and Rhetorical Text Analysis. From 2019 to 2023, she served as team leader and lecturer for the "Conversational Skills" module in the "Virtual Rhetoric" project.

She is actively involved in academic service as the managing director of the Rhetorikforum eV and as a member of the Tübingen Working Group 'Narrative Dynamics in Latin Literature,' the German Association of Classical Philologists, and the Literary Society (Scheffelbund).
