Justin Novak

Justin Novak is an Associate Professor in the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, British Columbia. He teaches Ceramics and Illustration, blending his background as a freelance illustrator in New York City with his later career as an exhibiting ceramic artist. Prior to academia, he worked for clients like The New York Times and Harper Collins.

• Education: BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY.

His ceramic works explore themes through international residencies, including the Kohler Factory and the Arabia Factory in Helsinki. Research interests include ceramics, illustration, industrial design, and material culture.

Artistic Projects:

• Icarus Junior (2008): A porcelain figure series critiquing modern societal issues, developed during a residency at the Arabia Factory in Helsinki.
• 21st Century Bunny (2006-2008): Addresses post-9/11 anxieties through porcelain figures, created in Denmark and Finland.
• Disfigurines (1997-2006): Rococo-inspired porcelain exploring psychological harm via physical wounds.
