Jun Wang

Jun Wang is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the University of Iowa College of Engineering. He holds secondary appointments in Physics and Astronomy, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and interdisciplinary programs in Geo-Informatics and Applied Math, while serving as Assistant Director of the Iowa Technology Institute and Lead of the AER Lab.

His research spans atmospheric composition, climate change, and air quality, with a focus on aerosol-climate interactions, trace gas dynamics, and Earth systems modeling. He also explores renewable energy and Earth science education, integrating multidisciplinary approaches across irrigation, land use, fire, and agricultural impacts.

Recent publications highlight advancements in aerosol layer height retrieval (via O2 bands), nighttime air quality monitoring (using moonlight), machine learning for PM2.5 mapping, and fire emissions modeling. These works demonstrate trends in high-resolution environmental monitoring, climate-pollution interdependencies, and data assimilation techniques.

Jun Wang advises students in atmospheric science, remote sensing, and climate modeling, with former advisees like Yi Wang now leading research at China University of Geosciences. His lab (AER Lab) collaborates with the Iowa Technology Institute and CGRER, emphasizing interdisciplinary research and policy-relevant science.
