Dr. Julie M. Norman is an Associate Professor in Politics & International Relations at University College London (UCL), where she teaches in the Department of Political Science. She serves as the Coordinator of UCL's Israel-Palestine Initiative (IPI) and is a Senior Associate Fellow on International Security at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
Her research focuses on conflict, political violence, and divided societies, with special emphasis on the Middle East, particularly the Israel-Palestine conflict. She employs mixed methods to investigate security, rights, and resistance in protracted conflicts and has used experimental approaches to assess public opinion on political violence and polarization in Western democracies. Her current major project is the book Gaza: The Dream and the Nightmare (Polity 2025), which provides a comprehensive political history of Gaza.
Dr. Norman's scholarly work spans multiple publications including six books and numerous articles in top journals such as Perspectives on Politics, Political Psychology, Security Dialogue, and the Journal of Global Security Studies. Her research demonstrates consistent engagement with both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in conflict zones.
She has received recognition through citations and media attention for her work, particularly her analysis of political imprisonment, nonviolent resistance, and contemporary conflicts. Her publications show strong interdisciplinary connections across political science, security studies, and Middle Eastern studies.
Dr. Norman actively engages with policy communities, having provided expert analysis to the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ministry of Defence, US State Department, and US Institute of Peace. She has conducted field research in multiple conflict zones including South Sudan, DRC, Burundi, and Myanmar.
As an educator, she convenes undergraduate modules on 'Political Violence,' 'Middle East Politics,' 'Israel-Palestine Conflict,' and 'Disagreeing Well,' demonstrating her commitment to teaching complex political issues to the next generation of scholars and practitioners.
