Juliann Kiang

Juliann Kiang is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Molecular Therapeutics and the Department of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), affiliated with the School of Medicine. She is a Principal Investigator at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), where her work focuses on radiation biology and combined injury mechanisms. Dr. Kiang holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (1983), and has extensive postdoctoral training in molecular biology and signal transduction.

Her research contributions include groundbreaking studies on heat shock proteins (HSP70), corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), and the molecular mechanisms underlying radiation injury, hemorrhage, and polytrauma. Key findings include the protective role of HSP70 in cellular stress, the development of CRF analogs for inflammation control, and the identification of sex-based differences in radiation sensitivity. She has pioneered therapeutic strategies using compounds like 17-DMAG, ciprofloxacin, and ghrelin to mitigate radiation and combined injuries.

Dr. Kiang has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, including seminal works on radiation combined injury models and stem cell therapies. Her work has been recognized through patents (e.g., for CRF-based anti-inflammatory methods and femtosecond laser pathogen inactivation) and prestigious awards such as the 2022 AFRRI Radiobiology Research Award and the 2016 AFRRI Research Award. She actively contributes to editorial boards and national committees, advancing military medicine and radiological countermeasures.
