Julia Walker

Julia Walker is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Art History at Binghamton University. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary architecture, urbanism, and the intersections of gender, politics, and religion in architectural practice.

Education:

• PhD in Art History, University of Pennsylvania
• MA in Art History, University of Pennsylvania

Research Interests: Walker examines modernist architectural ideas in contemporary practice, post-reunification Berlin’s urban development, and the gendered dynamics of architectural professions. Her book Berlin Contemporary: Architecture and Politics After 1990 (2021) analyzes the political and cultural significance of Berlin’s post-1990 architectural projects. Her current project, Why They Left: Women After Architecture, explores the histories of women excluded from the field.

Funding & Support: Her work has been supported by the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, Society of Architectural Historians, Walter Benjamin Kolleg of the University of Bern, and the Ellyn Uram Kaschak Institute for Social Justice for Women and Girls.

Publications: She has authored articles on Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and Daniel Libeskind, among others.
