Helen Walker

Helen Walker is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton's School of Architecture and Design, teaching on the MSc Town Planning program. Previously, she held roles at the University of Sussex and served as Chair of the Department of Urban Development and Regeneration at the University of Westminster. Her career includes senior policy advising roles in government, including at the Environment Agency and the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, alongside supervisory roles in academic/research programs. She has also acted as a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons DCLG Select Committee.

Research focuses on the historical development of town planning, including origins of National Parks, the Garden City movement, and community engagement practices. She examines political influences on planning processes and the evolution of urban design theories. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy challenges in sustainable communities and regional governance.

Teaching emphasizes practical case studies from professional experience, incorporating international projects through her British Council collaborations. She maintains strong ties to professional planning practice through engagement with local authorities and policy-making bodies.

Key advisory roles include contributions to the Inquiry into Built Environment Skills and coastal communities policy reviews. Helen’s expertise spans both academic research and applied policy development in urban planning sectors.
