Julia Kienast

Julia Kienast is a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University, focusing on international and European human rights law with a particular emphasis on refugee law. Her research explores the intersection of crisis policies and asylum systems, including the use of 'crisis tools' in migration governance. She completed her PhD at the University of Vienna on mass migration governance in Austria and currently participates in the ASILE and TemPro projects. Her work critiques the criminalization of migrants under security narratives and examines legal frameworks governing asylum and refugee rights.

Education:

• PhD in Law, University of Vienna (Thesis: Mass Migration Governance and Crisis Tools in Austria)

Research Interests: Crisis regulation, refugee law, European migration policy, human rights implications of crisis policies, and the interplay between terrorism and asylum narratives. She actively contributes to the Working Group on Climate Change, Disasters and Displacement and the Working Group on Feminist Theory, Refugees and Displacement.

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the ASILE project (Aarhus University) and the TemPro project. Affiliated with the Refugee Law Initiative and the University of London.
