Jules Riegel is a Lecturer in the Department of History and Literature at Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). They hold a Ph.D. in Modern European History from Indiana University Bloomington (2021), along with an M.A. and B.A. in History from Indiana University and Gonzaga University, respectively.
Research focuses on modern Polish-Jewish cultural history, the Holocaust, and music’s role during war and genocide. Current projects include a monograph on musical life in the Warsaw Ghetto and a second book on gender, sexuality, and collaboration in Holocaust camps/ghettos. Future work plans include transgender history in Eastern Europe.
Scholarship has been supported by prestigious fellowships: Harry Starr Fellowship (Harvard), Fulbright Grant (Warsaw, Poland), and Sosland Fellowship (U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum). Their work bridges historical analysis with cultural studies, emphasizing marginalized voices and interdisciplinary methods.
Publications include articles in Jewish Social Studies, Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry, and the Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933–1945. Research emphasizes reconstructing everyday life in oppressive contexts through music and cultural practices.
