José Azar is an Associate Professor at IESE Business School, part of the University of Navarra. He is also a Research Affiliate at the CEPR and a member of Economics for Inclusive Prosperity (EfIP). His academic career spans roles at Charles River Associates in the Antitrust and Competition Practice, and IESE Business School prior to his current position.
Prof. Azar earned a BA from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina and a PhD from Princeton University, reflecting a strong foundation in economics.
His research focuses on antitrust, corporate governance, labor economics, and common ownership. He investigates how common ownership affects market competition and labor dynamics, with recent work on monopsony power, automation, and market concentration. His publications address critical policy issues in competition law and economic theory.
Prof. Azar’s recent articles highlight trends in common ownership across labor markets, fintech, and merger control, as well as the intersection of monopsony, automation, and minimum wage policies. His work often integrates empirical analysis with theoretical models to assess market power and regulatory implications.
Scientific awards include the 2023 ECGI Finance Prize for Best Working Paper for his co-authored paper Revisiting the Anticompetitive Effects of Common Ownership.
