University of Texas Southwestern Medical CenterAbout
Joshua Gruber, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of the Division of Hematology and Oncology. He specializes in breast cancer, particularly metastatic and triple-negative subtypes, and conducts clinical trials for novel therapies. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of breast cancer initiation, tumor immunology, and epigenetic regulation linked to cellular metabolism. He holds secondary appointments in the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences and the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Education: M.D. and Ph.D. in cancer biology/biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, residency in internal medicine at Stanford University, and fellowships in medical oncology and cancer systems biology. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in medical oncology since 2021.
Research emphasizes chromatin dynamics, histone acetylation (via HAT1 enzyme), and the VISTA immunoreceptor's role in cancer. His lab develops synthetic biology tools and metabolic interventions to reprogram tumor epigenomes. Key projects include mitochondrial uncoupling's effects on differentiation and antibody therapies targeting VISTA.
Clinical interests include early-phase drug trials and personalized medicine for aggressive breast cancers. He serves as a peer reviewer for major oncology journals and is affiliated with the American Association for Cancer Research and Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer.
