Joshua Freedman

Joshua Freedman is an Assistant Professor of Politics at Oberlin College, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (2019), MA from University of British Columbia (2011), and BA (Hons) from University of Toronto (2010). His research examines the politics of recognition, identity, and status in international conflicts, with case studies on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Armenian-Turkish genocide disputes, Brexit, and China's rise.

His book project, The Recognition Dilemma in World Politics, analyzes how recognition struggles shape international relations. He publishes in journals like European Journal of International Relations and International Studies Quarterly. Recent professional activities include presenting at Princeton's "Images of Order" workshop and contributing to the Robert Jervis Forum on Michelle Murray's recognition theory work.

Teaching focuses on global politics, international law, and security, with courses like Introduction to International Politics and Technological Change and World Order. His research has been featured in Washington Post, Al Jazeera, and Globe and Mail.
