Prof Joseph Sung is a Distinguished University Professor and Senior Vice President (Health and Life Sciences) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He serves as Dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Coordinating Director of the NTU Integrated Medical, Biological & Environmental Sciences (NIMBELS). He holds MB BS from the University of Hong Kong (1983), PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of Calgary, and MD from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a Fellow of multiple medical colleges and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
His research focuses on gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, and the gut microbiome. He pioneered treatments for H. pylori infections, ulcer bleeding, and colorectal cancer screening in Asia-Pacific. His work during the SARS outbreak in 2003 earned him international recognition, including Time Magazine’s 'Asian Hero' title and the Silver Bauhinia Star from the Hong Kong Government.
Notable awards include the Laurel Award (2008), Marshall and Warren Lecture Award (2009), and the Master of the World Gastroenterology Organization Award (2013). He has authored over 1,000 articles and is a Clarivate Analytics 'Highly Cited Researcher' (2018–2020).
