Dr Jose Ramon Marcaida Lopez is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of St Andrews' School of Art History. His research focuses on intersections between art and science in early modern Hispanic contexts, particularly Spanish Baroque painting and the concept of 'ingenio.' Previous roles include Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge's CRASSH (ERC-funded 'Genius Before Romanticism' project) and Affiliated Lecturer in Art History at Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the CSIC/Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2011).
Research interests include:
- History of Spanish painting (Velázquez era)
- Early modern practical knowledge in the Americas (baquiano figures)
- Visual materials from the Francisco Hernández Expedition (1570-1577)
- Juan Eusebio Nieremberg's scientific illustrations
Key publications include his monograph Arte y ciencia en el Barroco español (2014) and co-authored Logodaedalus (2019). He was awarded the 2014 IV Premio Internacional Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez for his work on Baroque art.
Grants include participation in the ERC-funded 'Genius Before Romanticism' project. Teaching focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to art and science.
