About
Dr Vindhya Buthpitiya is a Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Film Studies. Her work examines the intersection of conflict, visual culture, and post-war dynamics in Sri Lanka, particularly focusing on ethno-nationalist struggles and the political role of photography. She is a core member of the ERC-funded PhotoDemos Collective and curates the Museum of Religious Freedom, Sri Lanka.
Her research investigates the global and local repercussions of Sri Lanka's civil war (1983–2009), analyzing how images—such as identity photographs, memorial portraits, and wartime evidence—shape narratives of identity, justice, and accountability. Current projects include studying the visual economies of war death and the 'Black July' pogrom's enduring visual legacy, supported by a Carnegie Trust grant.
Buthpitiya’s publications span ethnographic studies, edited volumes on photography's political imagination, and critical articles in journals like Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. She emphasizes photography as both an ideological tool and an emancipatory practice, exploring its role in activism, commemoration, and state accountability.
Her academic contributions include mentoring PhD students Ashley Bowes and Xi Chen, and her work bridges anthropology, visual studies, and postcolonial theory. She actively engages with transnational visual cultures and grassroots photographic practices in conflict zones.
