Jose Etcheverry

Jose Etcheverry is an Associate Professor at York University's Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, serving as Co-Chair of the Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI) and Director of the International Renewable Energy Academy (IREA). He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto, an MA in Geography & Environmental Studies from the University of Toronto, and a BA (Honours) in Geography & Environmental Studies from York University.

His research focuses on climate change mitigation, renewable energy policies, rural electrification, and educational networks. He emphasizes practical, work-integrated learning approaches to address the climate crisis, aiming to establish York University as a carbon-free institution. Key projects include fostering international collaborations and advancing gender-sensitive planning in renewable energy projects.

Recent articles explore solar energy feasibility, climate narratives, and policy strategies. Awards include the York University President’s Sustainability Leadership Award and Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation Teaching Excellence Award. He contributes to boards and initiatives promoting renewable energy adoption and sustainable development.
