Joschka Wanner is Assistant Professor of Quantitative International and Environmental Economics at the University of Würzburg, with additional affiliations at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and CESifo. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bayreuth and degrees in Economics and Mathematics. His research examines international trade dynamics using structural gravity models, with particular focus on environmental policy interactions, carbon border adjustments, and economic sanctions.
His publications analyze critical policy issues including climate agreement participation, sanctions efficacy against Iran and Russia, and EU-Turkey trade relations. Methodologically, he develops econometric approaches for high-dimensional fixed effects estimation in trade models. Recent work explores the geopolitical implications of climate policies and the welfare impacts of coordinated sanctions regimes.
