Jorge Coronado

Jorge Coronado is a Professor of modern Latin American and Andean literatures and cultures at Northwestern University’s Department of Spanish & Portuguese. He holds core faculty status in the Program in Latin American & Caribbean Studies and serves as Director of the Andean Cultures & Histories working group. His research bridges literary studies, visual culture, and critical theory, with a focus on the Andean region’s cultural and historical dynamics. He earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University.

Coronado’s work explores interdisciplinary intersections between literature, history, archaeology, and anthropology. His research has been supported by major grants such as the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and the American Academy in Berlin. He has held visiting professorships at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and lectures globally. His editorial roles include Series Editor for the University of Pittsburgh Press’ Illuminations: Cultural Formations of the Americas series and contributions to PMLA and Revista de Estudios Hispánicos.

His publications include The Andes Imagined (2009), Portraits in the Andes (2018), and co-edited volumes on Andean visual practices and anarchist-Marxist texts. Current projects examine Andean regionalism and subaltern literacy practices in early 20th-century Latin America. He has spearheaded departmental initiatives at Northwestern, including expanding the Spanish & Portuguese doctoral program and strengthening interdisciplinary Latin American studies.
