Jordana Mendelson

Jordana Mendelson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University and serves as the Director of the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (KJCC). Her academic work focuses on early twentieth-century visual culture in Spain.

• B.A. in Art History with a minor in Spanish from Boston University (1988)
• M.A. in Art History from Yale University (1993)
• Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University (1999)

Dr. Mendelson's research explores the intersection of art, media, and national identity in early twentieth-century Spain. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining art history, cultural studies, and political history to analyze how visual materials shaped modern Spanish identity.

Her publications reflect expertise in modernist art movements, wartime print culture, and documentary photography. Notable works include studies on exhibition practices, magazine publishing during the Spanish Civil War, and avant-garde photography in Republican Barcelona.
