Jonathan French

Jonathan French is an Associate Teaching Professor and Undergraduate Director in the Department of Chemistry at Syracuse University. He holds affiliations with the Science Teaching program. His role focuses on innovative pedagogy and inclusive education in large introductory science courses. French earned a BS in Chemistry from St. Lawrence University (2006), an MS in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven (2008), and a PhD in Chemistry from SUNY Buffalo (2014). His postdoctoral work at the University of Delaware explored self-healing polymers.

Research interests center on enhancing student engagement through active learning, developing accessible STEM curricula, and supporting students with dyscalculia. He leads the HHMI-funded CHANcE initiative promoting inclusive excellence in science education. French actively presents at national conferences, focusing on topics like online assessments, learning assistant programs, and DEIA strategies.

Teaching responsibilities include the General Chemistry lecture sequence (CHE 106/116) and specialized courses like Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry. He advises undergraduate chemistry majors and serves as faculty advisor for the SU ACS chapter and Alpha Chi Sigma. Awards include the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Program (2022) and the Meredith Teaching Recognition Award (2021).

Service contributions span roles such as Faculty Liaison for the STM Learning Community, member of the HHMI Faculty Working Group, and organizer of outreach events like the Valley Nature Run. His work integrates pedagogical innovation with community-building initiatives to foster equitable STEM education.
