Jonathan Fillmore

Dr. Jonathan Fillmore is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Consultant in the Division of Oral Diagnosis and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Department of Surgery, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He serves as an Examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and holds leadership positions in several professional organizations including serving as President of the AAOMS Clinical Interest Group on Temporomandibular Joint Surgery.

Dr. Fillmore earned his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine (2008), MD from Mayo Medical School (2011), and completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (2014). His educational background also includes a General Surgery Internship (2013) and Special Clinical Fellowship in General Surgery (2012).

His research focuses on osteoradionecrosis, trigeminal nerve injury repair, and dentoalveolar surgery in medically complex patients. Dr. Fillmore's clinical studies range from routine dental extractions in immunocompromised patients to complex facial reconstructions, with the goal of improving patient quality of life and functional outcomes. His recent publications demonstrate expertise in TMJ surgery, facial trauma management, and surgical education methodology.

Dr. Fillmore has established significant recognition in his field, most notably receiving the 2022 Daniel M. Laskin Award for best research paper in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His work helps establish clinical guidelines that mitigate treatment risks and improve surgical protocols, particularly for TMJ reconstruction patients.

As an educator, Dr. Fillmore actively mentors surgical residents and studies resident competency, surgical simulation, and mentorship to improve training methods for future surgeons. His commitment to education is reflected in his service on the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and Surgical Graduate Education Committee.
