Jonathan F. Gunn is an Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin. He holds a B.M. from Rice University and an M.M. from Duquesne University. Prior to UT Austin, he served in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, holding roles such as Associate Principal/Eb Clarinet (2004–2016) and Principal Clarinet (2011–2016). His career spans orchestral performance, solo recitals, and chamber music collaborations, with notable engagements at the Tanglewood, Aspen, and Bard Music Festivals. Gunn is a Vandoren Artist and Buffet Group USA Performing Artist.
His research and teaching focus on clarinet performance, pedagogy, and French repertoire. He has released recordings on labels such as Centaur Records and Reference Recordings, including his solo album featuring French clarinet works. Gunn’s awards include the 2024 Butler School of Music Teaching Excellence Award.
As a mentor, he advises over 15 students, many of whom hold positions in major orchestras like the Atlanta Symphony and Chicago Sinfonietta. His performances emphasize technical mastery and artistic depth, blending classical tradition with innovative interpretation.
