Jonathan Barritt

Jonathan Barritt is a Professor of Viola at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he also teaches in the Junior Department. He holds positions as principal viola with the English Chamber Orchestra and has led sections in major orchestras like the London Symphony and Philharmonia. His career spans solo performances, chamber music collaborations, and orchestral leadership.

Barritt studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with distinction in 1983. He has been a member of the Allegri String Quartet and Divertimenti Ensemble, specializing in reviving early works for cello quintets. He is a trustee of the Tertis Foundation, supporting viola heritage and competitions.

He performs on a Giovanni and Francesco Grancino viola (c.1680) and maintains active roles in education and ensemble performance.
