About
Jon Resch, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology at the University of Iowa. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, focusing on neural mechanisms regulating appetite and cardiometabolic physiology. His research employs genetically engineered mouse models, Cre-dependent AAVs, and advanced neuroscience tools like chemogenetics and rabies virus tracing. Resch serves as Director of Admissions for the Neuroscience and Pharmacology Education programs. He completed his BS in Neuroscience/Psychology at the University of Minnesota and his PhD in Neuroscience at Marquette University.
Research interests center on adrenal steroid hormone influences on appetite, particularly aldosterone-sensing neurons in sodium regulation and glucocorticoid effects on hypothalamic hunger pathways. His lab combines single-cell RNA sequencing with CRISPR-engineered mouse models to identify novel neuronal subtypes involved in energy/fluid balance. Techniques include electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and anatomical circuit mapping.
Publications highlight work on hypothalamic circuits, insular cortex physiology, leptin-HPA axis interactions, and thermogenic adipose tissue innervation. Resch collaborates with institutions like the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center and Iowa Neuroscience Institute. His lab is located in the Bowen Science Building (BSB 2-300), with administrative offices in BSB 2-307.
