Jon Mitchell

Jon Mitchell is an Associate Professor in American Studies at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of Politics, Philosophy and American Studies. He joined UEA in 2010 after teaching at Irish institutions and holds a PhD from the University of Wales, Swansea (2003). His research spans interdisciplinary themes in American culture, gender theory, and narrative analysis.

His research focuses on intersections of masculinity and national identity, queer theory, psychoanalytic frameworks, and mid-20th-century American culture. Recent publications examine dystopian innocence in Samuel Delany’s works and critiques of masculinity in films like Logan. He employs interdisciplinary methodologies combining literary, film, and cultural analysis.

Jon has held leadership roles including Course Director, Athena Swan Co-Lead, and served on university-wide moderation and assessment committees. He teaches core modules in American Studies and Film/TV degrees, covering topics such as 1980s American cinema, gender/sexuality in film, and postcolonial narratives.

He supervises undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations on diverse topics like Lesbian Pulp Fiction, QAnon conspiracies, and Queer appropriations of Alice in Wonderland, while also serving as an external examiner at the University of Essex (2019–2022).
