John Steinberg

Dr. John Steinberg is a Researcher in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, affiliated with the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research. He has served in this role since 2006 and directs the Digital Archaeology Laboratory.

• PhD in Anthropology from UCLA (1997)
• Former faculty at UCLA and California State University Northridge

His research focuses on economic aspects of colonization in New England and the North Atlantic, utilizing GIS and shallow geophysics to analyze settlement patterns. He leads the Skagafjordur Archaeological Settlement Survey (SASS) in Iceland, studying social stratification and property rights from the Viking Age (AD 874-1700) through post-colonial periods.

Steinberg has secured nearly $500,000 in research grants, primarily from the National Science Foundation, supporting his work in landscape archaeology and digital methodologies.
