John S. Wiebe

John S. Wiebe is Professor of Psychology and Provost at the University of Texas at El Paso, leading research on psychological adaptation to chronic medical conditions. His work develops culturally responsive interventions for Spanish-speaking populations managing HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses.

Research focuses on:

• Cognitive-behavioral interventions for comorbid depression
• Cross-cultural psychometric validation
• Medication adherence mechanisms
• Substance use in avoidant coping

Significant grant funding from NIH, Paso del Norte Health Foundation, and Hogg Foundation supports clinical trials adapting CBT for Latino populations. Wiebe founded the El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium and received the UTEP Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award.

Educational background includes a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Iowa and postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
