John R. M. Hand

John R. M. Hand is a Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School and a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business since 2017. He earned his 1st Class B.Sc. in Accounting from Bristol University (England), an MBA with honors (1981–1983), and a PhD (1984–1987) from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he previously taught from 1988 to 1993.

Research Interests

• Equity analysts’ valuation models and financial statement forecasts
• Cost of capital estimation in corporate finance
• Racial and ethnic diversity in executive leadership of public companies
• Intangible asset valuation (co-authored book: Intangible Assets: Values, Measures and Risks, 2003)

Academic Roles & Awards

• Received the UNC Kenan-Flagler Distinguished Research Award (2019) and Weatherspoon Awards for MAC (2013) and MBA (2008) Teaching
• Twice winner of the American Accounting Association’s competitive manuscript competition
• Teaches Financial Statement Analysis at Booth and across MBA, MAC, PhD, and Executive Development Programs at UNC
