John R Shaffer

John R. Shaffer is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Education in Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh. He directs the MS and PhD Programs in Human Genetics and serves as Director of Graduate Studies, with dual faculty appointments in Human Genetics and Oral and Craniofacial Sciences.

His research focuses on applying statistical and bioinformatics methodologies to uncover genetic factors underlying complex diseases, with particular emphasis on:

• Heritability and linkage analysis
• Genetic association studies
• Epigenetics and gene-environment interactions
• Oral health and craniofacial phenotypes
• Neurogenetic recovery mechanisms from brain injury

Education:

• 2003 BS in Biology from Pennsylvania State University
