Dr John Miers is a Senior Lecturer in Illustration and Critical and Historical Studies at Kingston School of Art (Kingston University), and a member of the Comics Research Hub at University of the Arts London. His academic work focuses on narrative illustration, visual metaphor, and the intersection of comics with disability studies. He holds a PhD in Graphic Communication from Central Saint Martins (UAL) and has taught at multiple institutions including the Royal College of Art.
Education: PhD Graphic Communication (2018, Central Saint Martins), Postgraduate Diploma Fine Art (2004, Chelsea College of Art), BA Fine Art (2001, Slade School of Fine Art).
Research interests span drawing theory, metaphor in visual narratives, and embodiment in comics. Notable works include Score and Script (2014), recognized as one of the top British comics that year. Awards include the 2020 Broken Frontier 'Best One-Shot' for his autobiographical comic on living with multiple sclerosis.
He has held research grants including a Post-Confirmation Studentship and CSM fees bursary. Active in academic communities, he co-organizes the Transitions symposium and founded the UAL Comics Research Hub. Teaches across illustration, graphic art, and critical studies, while running the Kingston School of Art Comic Club.
