John Marshall Clark

John Marshall Clark is a Professor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and serves as Director of the Massachusetts Pesticide Analysis Laboratory. His research addresses critical challenges in pesticide resistance, vector control, and environmental contaminant exposure through interdisciplinary biochemical and molecular approaches.

Clark's research spans environmental toxicology and chemistry with focus on: resistance mechanisms in human head lice using artificial membrane feeding systems; age-grading Aedes aegypti mosquitoes for dengue vector control via cuticular hydrocarbons; neurotoxic action of pyrethroids on calcium channels; dermal/inhalation exposure assessment for turf pesticides; and estrogenic effects of PCBs/nonylphenol on Atlantic salmon osmoregulation. His work integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, and behavioral analysis to address public health and ecological risks.

As laboratory director, Clark leads pesticide analysis initiatives and maintains active collaborations with UC-Davis (vector biology) and US Fisheries and Wildlife Department (salmon studies). His research directly informs resistance management strategies, vector control protocols, and human exposure mitigation for recreational pesticide use.
