John Gartner is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. His research focuses on structural genomic approaches for cancer risk stratification, particularly in neuroblastoma, thyroid cancers, and kidney cancers, through collaborations with Dr. Sabine Mai at CancerCare Manitoba.

Research interests include cancer biology, transplantation immunology, structural genomics, and tumor progression, with applications in surgical pathology and kidney disease. His work employs 3D-telomere profiling and superresolution microscopy to analyze nuclear DNA structure.
Scientific awards include the 2009 Doctors Manitoba Scholastic Award, the 1986 Canadian Association of Pathologists Wild Leitz Award, and an MRC Research Fellowship (1980-1983). He has secured $3,102,700 in career funding as a co-principal investigator.
Dr. Gartner served as Head of Pathology at the University of Manitoba from 2005-2015.
