John E. Kelly

John E. Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Washington University in St. Louis, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and specializes in Eastern North American archaeology, particularly the Mississippian culture in the central Mississippi River Valley. His research focuses on the emergence, decline, and cultural dynamics of Mississippian societies, with key projects at Cahokia, the Range site, and East St. Louis mound centers.

His work emphasizes the role of ritual, kinship, and environmental factors in societal development. Notable projects include the analysis of the Range site’s 5000 features and 600 structures, revealing 25 occupational episodes between AD 600–1100. Recent efforts involve rediscovering East St. Louis’s mounds amid urban development, uncovering five mounds and prehistoric structures. Kelly also investigates early Mississippian villages and Cahokia’s ritualized crafts.

Publications span 1999–2008, addressing topics like Cahokia’s collapse, Mississippian religion, and faunal analysis. His research bridges archaeology with historical preservation, emphasizing the interplay between ritual practices and societal organization.

Fieldwork includes directing excavations at Cahokia and the Range site, as well as collaborative projects on the Pulcher Tradition and Charles Rau’s 19th-century contributions. His work highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding prehistoric societies and their legacy.
