John David O'Brien

John David O'Brien is a Professor in the Integrated Studies department at ArtCenter College of Design, where he teaches courses such as Design Fundamentals, Grad Studio Materials Lab, and Shop Skills Materials Lab. He is deeply engaged in both artistic practice and curatorial work, with a strong presence in the Los Angeles art scene and international collaborations, particularly with Italy.

His educational background includes an MFA from the University of Southern California, a degree from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, a Magistero from the Istituto Statale D’Arte di Urbino, and formal recognition as a Master Printer from the Calcografia Nazionale in Rome, Italy.

O'Brien's research and creative interests span artist books, public art, typography, and site-specific installations. His work often explores the intersection of text, materiality, and space, as seen in long-term curatorial projects like TOMES and exhibitions at LAX terminals and cultural centers. He has co-curated and organized over two decades of artist-driven exhibitions, emphasizing collaboration and experimental formats.

His artistic output has been supported by prestigious awards including the Fulbright Research Grant, the California Community Foundation Artist Fellowship, and the City of Los Angeles Artist Grant, underscoring his impact in the field of contemporary art.

O'Brien has played a foundational role in artist-run spaces such as the Brewery Project (1993–2007), the M*YT*H* Series, and Out of the Blue, fostering community and experimental art practices. He continues to curate major public exhibitions, including recent projects like Correspondences / Corrispondenze (2024) at Roswell Space and installations in LA County public buildings.
