Jason S. Yi is a Professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where he remains an active faculty member. He also serves as gallery director of Hawthorn Contemporary and collaborates with Leah Kolb from the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on the Plum Blossom Initiative, a curatorial platforming project. His artistic practice spans photography, video, sculpture, drawing, multimedia, and installation art, with exhibitions in major cities globally including New York, Beijing, and Milwaukee. Notable projects include his 2013 inclusion in the Inside-out Art Museum’s international biennial and Sculpture/Milwaukee 2017 curated by Russell Bowman.
Yi holds significant awards such as the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2014), Mary L. Nohl Fellowship (2007), and Kamiyama Artist Residency Fellowship (2003). His work resides in permanent collections at institutions like the Milwaukee Art Museum, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles. He has conducted solo exhibitions, including 'Yellow Mountains and Other Places' at Dean Jensen Gallery reviewed by Artforum Magazine, and participates in international venues like the Moran Museum of Art (Seoul) and Hotel Pupik (Austria).
Yi’s professional narrative intertwines academic teaching, curatorial leadership, and transnational artistic collaboration. His projects often explore themes bridging cultural identity and contemporary visual expression, reflected through his diverse material practices and exhibition history across 10+ countries.
