John Cook is an Assistant Professor of Law at the William H. Bowen School of Law. He directs the Rural Practice Incubator Project and is affiliated with the Center for Criminal Justice and Racial Justice Reform. His teaching includes Research, Writing & Analysis courses. Cook holds a B.A. from Yale University (1999), M.Sc. from Oxford University (2002), and J.D. from Duke University School of Law (2004).
His research focuses on legal writing, criminal justice reform, and national security law, as evidenced by his 2022 publication in the Harvard National Security Journal. He received dual Faculty Excellence Awards (Law School and University) in 2025 for rising faculty achievements.
Cook’s career includes judicial clerkships across federal and territorial courts, roles as Assistant Attorney General, and service as Archivist for the Northern Mariana Islands. He has taught at Elon University, University of North Dakota, and other institutions adjunctively.
