Prof Johan van Tol is an Associate Professor in the Department of Soil, Crop, and Climate Sciences at the University of the Free State, where he has worked since 2016. His research focuses on hydropedology, environmental soil science, soil physics, and pedology, with specific projects in mountainous regions like the Cathedral Peak area and soil degradation studies in the Sentinal Peak/Amphitheatre area.
His work also includes innovative environmental applications such as using biochar to reduce pollution from pit latrines in Qwaqwa (Phuthaditjhaba). He has delivered over 70 scientific consultancy reports, 50+ peer-reviewed publications, and 70+ presentations at national and international conferences.
