Professor Melanie Walker is a Senior Research Professor in Higher Education and Human Development at the University of the Free State (UFS), where she holds the NRF Chair in Higher Education and Human Development. Previously, she was a Professor of Higher Education at the University of Nottingham (UK), serving as Honorary Professor there. She holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town and undergraduate degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Her research focuses on higher education governance, human development frameworks, gender empowerment in academia, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Notable projects include the Miratho initiative (ESRC-DFID funded), exploring youth agency in Zimbabwe, and the Uni-PRA project addressing sustainable communities. She has authored over 140 journal articles, 13 books, and contributed to seminal works on doctoral education and public-good professionals.
Professor Walker serves as Vice-President of the Human Development and Capability Association (2014-2017) and holds editorial roles across journals like the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. Her awards include an NRF Al-rating and ASSAF fellowship. Current research themes include reparative futures in education, technological impacts on engaged scholarship, and equitable access to higher education in Africa.
Her work bridges theory and practice through projects like the STINT collaboration and the SAAIR/SciSTIP initiative, emphasizing community engagement and epistemic justice. She has supervised numerous doctoral candidates and leads UFS's Integrated Transformation Plan (ITP) addressing systemic inequities in academia.
