
About
Johan Wens is a Professor at the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Family Medicine and Population Health (FAMPOP). He serves as head of the Center for General Practice Medicine and holds a Visiting Professor position at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Hue, Vietnam. Additionally, he works part-time as a general practitioner in Ekeren (Antwerp North) in a duo practice with his wife Annick De Strooper.
His research focuses on:
- Palliative care (advance care planning, care for vulnerable populations)
- Chronic and complex care delivery
- Interdisciplinary health care
- Multi-morbidity and polypharmacy
- Medical education and assessment
- Guideline development
Prof. Wens teaches across multiple levels of medical education, including Evidence Based Medicine at the Bachelor level, and various courses on General Practice and Palliative Care at the Master level. He directs master theses and serves as examiner for the master-after-master degree of General Practitioner.
He represents the University Department in several regional and national bodies including RIZIV (National Institute for Sickness and Invalidity Insurance), NRKP (National Council for Quality Promotion in Health Care), Domus Medica (GPs' Organization), and the Accreditation Council. He chairs Palliative Help Antwerp (PHA) and the Diabetes Interactive Education Program (DIEP), having previously chaired Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE) until February 2017.
Within the university, Prof. Wens holds leadership positions including Chairman of the Master General Practice Education Committee and Vice-chairman of the Bachelor-Master Medicine Internship Committee.
