Johan Berg Pettersen

Johan Berg Pettersen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at NTNU. He serves as the Program Councilor for Energy and Sustainability Studies and Program Director for the Master's programs in Industrial Ecology. His research focuses on sustainable engineering, life cycle assessment (LCA), and circular economy principles, with emphasis on product lifecycle extension, metallurgical waste valorization, and sustainable production systems.

Education: Completed his PhD in 2007 at NTNU, with prior teaching and research roles at several Norwegian universities. His work bridges academia and industry through collaborations like FME ZeMe (climate-neutral metal production) and Sintef Energi.

Research Interests: Circular economy implementation, sustainable metallurgy, waste-to-resource strategies, and lifecycle analysis of consumer goods. Key projects include SisAl Pilot (low-impact silicon production) and CircWtE (waste-to-energy systems).

Teaching: Courses on LCA, sustainable engineering, and Industrial Ecology at both bachelor and master levels. Specializes in online sustainability education techniques for large student cohorts.

Grants & Projects: Lead researcher in EU-funded projects (e.g., Horizon 2020) and Norwegian Research Council initiatives. Active in interdisciplinary teams addressing metal industry challenges and consumer goods sustainability.
