Joe Purden

Joe Purden is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Physics Technology at Swansea University's School of Health and Social Care, within the Healthcare Science Department. He holds a First Class Honours BSc in Clinical Technology (Swansea University, 2015) and a Master's in Radiation Biology from the University of Oxford. Currently pursuing a part-time PhD in cancer communication and patient education in radiotherapy, his expertise spans nuclear medicine technology, radiotherapy physics education, and virtual reality in medical training.

Research Interests:

Joe focuses on improving patient education in radiotherapy, optimizing access to timely treatments, and leveraging virtual reality for medical communication. His work addresses challenges like travel burden and healthcare efficiency post-pandemic, with a clinical emphasis on breast cancer treatment protocols and radiation physics practices.

Teaching & Roles:

Teaches modules in Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy Physics, and Radiation Protection. Serves as UK Representative for the NSHCS Physical Sciences Board and contributes to the British Nuclear Medicine Society. He also reviews MSc Nuclear Medicine programmes externally at the University of Salford.

Labs/Teams:

Engages with clinical and academic collaborations, including outreach via Oriel Science and local healthcare institutions, to bridge research and patient education.
