Joan Roses

Professor Joan Roses is a Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics (LSE), specializing in Modern and Contemporary Europe. Her research focuses on historical economic geography, long-term economic growth, well-being, and policy issues. She holds a PhD in History and Civilization from the European University Institute and has been at LSE since 2013. She is a Fellow of CEPR, the Instituto Figuerola, and the Academy of Social Sciences, and served as editor of the European Review of Economic History (2015–2023).

Education: B.A. in History and Geography (University of Barcelona), M.Sc. in Economic History (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Universitat de Barcelona), PhD in History and Civilization (European University Institute).

Research interests include regional inequality, housing markets, and the impact of pandemics. She co-authored books on the Great Influenza Pandemic (2022) and the Economic Development of Europe's Regions (2018). Recent projects explore regional disparities in Spain and Europe's long-run inequality.

Her articles span journals like Journal of Economic History and World Development, addressing topics such as pandemic redistributive effects and regional growth. Awards include her CEPR Fellowship and contributions to the Rosés-Wolf database on regional GDP.

Professor Roses supervises numerous PhD students and leads research projects on topics like UK regional inequality and the economic impact of WWII policies. She chairs the Research Degrees Sub-Committee at LSE and contributes to academic governance and policy advisory roles.
