Joan Haaland Paddock

Dr. Joan Haaland Paddock is a Professor of Music and Trumpet Specialist at Linfield University's Vivian Bull Music Center. She serves as a renowned performer, conductor, and educator with over 25 years of experience leading the Linfield Concert Band. Her expertise spans classical trumpet performance, Nordic folk instruments (notably the lur), and music education innovation.

Dr. Paddock holds a Doctorate of Music from Indiana University and is a Fulbright Scholar. Her accolades include an Emmy Award for original composition and a prestigious Bach Trumpet Clinician title. She has performed globally, including with the Oregon Symphony, Britt Festival Orchestra, and in cultural festivals across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Her research focuses on ethnomusicology, rhythm-based wellness, and Nordic musical heritage. She teaches courses in world music cultures, conducting, and drum-based community building through her 'Drumwise' program. She actively promotes inclusive music education and has pioneered the revival of ancient Nordic instruments like the lur, notably through lectures and collaborations with historical societies in Norway.
